Whatever business you are in somebody will have told you that you need to be using social media for your business and most of the time they are right – social media is an essential tool for engaging with your target audience, building relationships with customers and helping them achieve more online.

However every social media platform is different and how you use each one needs to be different too. When creating your social media plan consider which channel you will use; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and such like and then create the individual components for each channel.

You need to think about the persona and the type of person you are specifically targeting via that channel, start with just choosing one. This consider your goal from that social media channel, do you want to gain sales, grow brand awareness, create a better customer experience or have somewhere customers can go to speak to you, ask questions and see latest products and services?

Have a think about the type of context that will work on that channel too, are you are looking at short snappy posts with links or in depth paragraphs with lots of details? Perhaps you’d rather use video content or clear infographics – or just photos of the products you sell?

Take time to consider your tone too, will you be formal and professional, cheeky and funny, laidback, playful or sarcastic? When you have decided on your tone for that social media channel ensure you follow that tone through on all social media posts for that channel.

Do you want your social media channels to mix with each other or will you keep them completely separate? Think about how they will integrate with your website too, will you have continuous links to the website and will visitors be able to share website pages on social media channels easily? Do you want them to be able to?

What is the desired action you are aiming for through the social media channel, what do you want the person to do when they come to your social media channel? Do you want them to engage? Go through to your website and buy something or would you rather they asked questions and a relationship was beginning to be built between you?
