We recently shared a blog post talking about the different people coming to support our Careers Awareness Day at Linchfield Community Primary School in Deeping, but we also shared some of the reasons that the volunteers had offered to get involved.
In this blog post we asked Emma of Serco, in partnership with Peterborough City Council, why she was so keen to come along and support this event and here is what she had to say;
My name is Emma and I am responsible for team performance, contract and supplier management and finances for ICT. When I heard about the career day I was really keen to be involved, firstly because Linchfield is my son’s school but secondly because it took me a long time to decide what I really wanted to do as a career. In a way I am still torn between Procurement and Finance but I am at least now in the right sector.
When I was about year 6 age I wanted to be an RAF Engineer, by secondary school I wanted to be a PE teacher and I went onto University to pursue this career. In my 4th year it finally hit home, teaching wasn’t for me. After finishing my degree I worked in childcare, administration, sports camps etc as I didn’t know what to do. In 2005 I got a temp job at the Council. I have been there since and moved my way up from a stores and admin assistant through different teams and departments to where I am now.
I think it is important for children to know that there are many different jobs and they can be anything they want to be when they work for it. They do not have to follow the traditional educational routes to get there; they can select one that meets their needs as well as circumstances. ICT is still a male dominated area as well as management, but women are moving up and having a positive influence in these sectors which I think is important for children, especially girls to see. It’s all about breaking the norms, just because it was like that then, doesn’t mean it has to be now.
This Careers Awareness Day takes place on Wednesday 1st March from 12.30pm-3.30pm, if you would like to come along or know someone who would be ideal for the event please email me at [email protected] and we can hopefully sign you up too.
