When it comes to website copy it’s important that you include keywords, but this is not always as easy as it sounds. Enter too many keywords and you may get penalised for keyword stuffing in your website copy, enter too few keywords and Google may not realise the keywords that you want to be found for – it’s tricky ground to getting it right. But we have put together some tips for you;
- Use keywords in your content, but no more that 5% – 10% of the time. Your website copy should be no more than 10% keywords or it looks spammy and could get you penalised
- Try and make sure that your keywords or keyword is in the title of the blog post or website page and also in the first paragraph. It can be tricky to get it in the title sometimes, but make sure it is always in the first paragraph at least once, ideally twice.
- When it comes to keywords think about the sorts of things your target audience would enter into a search engine to find your business, then use this as your keyword. For example if you’re an Italian restaurant in Peterborough, people will use those four words to find your website so use that as your keyword search term.
- Make sure you enter your keywords naturally and carefully, the less obvious your keywords are to your target audience the better. This will make for a better article for the reader and therefore a lower bounce rate on your website, which will help increase the rankings of your website on Google and other search engines.
- It’s important that you take your time, don’t rush your website content as it will read as rushed and like no real effort has gone into the website copy and it won’t be as enjoyable for the reader.
- You want to aim for 300-600 words in your website copy for Google to index it. Some experts say 1,000 words are better for SEO but make sure you don’t waffle or babble as the reader will feel that you are wasting their time.
- If you put subheadings in your website copy, which is a great idea to make your content easy to scan by the reader, then try and include keywords in those subheadings so Google and other search engines can clearly see what search terms and keywords you want your website to be found for.
When putting keywords into your website copy, remember you are writing for the reader to your website, not just the search engine. Google will know if the content is being enjoyed by the reader so it’s important that is who you are writing for.
