I was talking to a leisure club last week about their online marketing. We spoke about website content, blogs and keeping the website fresh. At this point the director of the business went quiet. He said that just last week he had someone call up to check that they were still in business. Why? Because there most recent blog post said that the Queen had died.

This bought a few points to mind, and this is why I wanted to share it in a blog post.

What relevance does the queen dying have to your business? If it’s to say that you’re closed for the day, then that makes sense. But is that the last time you were closed for business? What about the bank holidays or Christmas holidays since then?

Is your business related to the Queen? Perhaps it’s Buckingham Palace or the Tower of London? Therefore, opening times or what can be viewed may have changed due to the passing of the Queen. So again, that blog post makes sense.

However, if you have no relevance, like this business, why does it matter that the Queen has died? Also, she died some time ago now, but that conversation took place in June 2025. It’s not a news site, and even if it was, there has been news since then.

News articles are fine to share on your website, if they are relevant to your business. It’s also a good idea to share your take or thoughts on the matter. For example, if it was that the Queen has passed, you could talk about a favourite memory or a time you met her. This makes it more relevant to your business.

But – if you are going to have a blog on your website, keep it fresh. I don’t mean that you need to delete the old news as it passed. However, make sure you keep posting. Having news that is out of date, like this example, is not good. It makes it look like you are not still in business.

We do a lot of competitor research for our clients. Since covid we have seen a lot of businesses talking about how they are closing for covid. Some are saying how they are opening after covid. This was over 3 years ago that ‘normality’ returned.

Blogging is great for business and SEO. However, it only works for your business is you are consistent with your posting and you keep it fresh and up to date. Need help to keep your business blogs fresh and up to date on your website? Call our Peterborough bloggers now.
